There is perhaps no question of greater importance than that of whether the human species is alone in the universe. I now consider this to effectively be a rhetorical question. In the past decade or two we have come to see that our galaxy is populated with endless numbers of planets. Given that there are 100 billion stars in our galaxy and about 100 billion galaxies (and counting), it is as good as impossible that we are alone.
Then there is the controversial issue of UFOs and alien encounters with individuals and governments. The discussion on this issue is another one of those domains which is effectively forbidden in mainstream science – unless you assume the null hypothesis, that there is nothing to see here. To suggest otherwise is to invite ridicule or academic censure.
I believe a more rational approach is the one taken by former astronaut Edgar Mitchel, founder of IONS. In the video interview below, he discusses the UFO issue, and what it means for the future of humanity. I found the video on Conscious Life News, who also kindly published my Ted, Knowledge and Power oped.
My conviction is that there is something very real and very important happening here. My perspective is informed by my witnessing two very different kinds of UFOs on the same night, one hour apart about twenty years ago. One was a great ball of etheric light, which glided silently across the night sky. The the other was either a formation of red, glowing circular objects flying in a “V” formation, or a single triangular craft (it was hard to be certain). I detail the event in my book Extraordinary Mind. For those who haven’t read the tale, I include it below.
In 1996 I was living in Coffs Harbour, New South Wales, Australia, a small coastal town. One day I was walking along the street downtown, and I saw a sign which read: “Psychic readings, $10”. I had never had a psychic reading up till that time, and curiosity got the better of me. So I went inside and met a woman named Leslie who gave me a “reading.” The reading itself was nothing particularly special. But what followed certainly was.
To cut a long story short, I ended up going to one of Leslie’s talk/meditation evenings a few weeks later. At the end of the talk she told everyone present that she had had lots of dreams about UFOs the previous night.
“Whenever I have these dreams there are lots of UFO sightings around,” she said. “So if you go out tonight you may see something. I feel that about two in the morning would be the right time.”
Now, being the gullible fool that I am, I decided to take up the offer. I went to bed at about 11 p.m., but set my alarm for 1.45.
When the alarm rang, I managed to drag myself out of bed. I stumbled around my house for 15 minutes, and then headed outside at 2.00 a.m. sharp.
My eyes almost popped out of my head when I swung the door open and looked up at the sky. For flying right in front of me in the clear night sky was something I had never seen before. I can only describe it as a large ball of luminous white light, about a third the size of a full moon. The thing was probably a few hundred metres in the air, and was floating eastwards at about 90 degrees above the horizon. There was absolutely no sound, and it seemed to be gliding on air. I can only describe it as eerily unearthly. I ran out onto the road, and watched it disappear over the neighbours’ houses. In total it was in view about 30 seconds.
The ball of light was heading east, out over the ocean, and since I was in an excitable state, I ran down to the beach, which was only a few hundred metres from where I lived. I walked up and down the beach for an hour, but the ball of light was nowhere to be seen.
Finally I gave up, and decided to head back to bed. I walked back down the short street to my home, and trudged up the driveway. Then, as I was about to duck under the doorway (I’m rather tall) I looked up one last time. Once again my eyes nearly jumped out of my head. I saw something equally as amazing as the ball of light. For, moving directly over my head there was a group of about twenty red, circular lights, flying in a double-V formation, one “V” inside the other. Again there was no sound, just eerie silence. The objects flew in a southerly direction, parallel the coast. They appeared to be a few hundred metres in the air, and within half a minute disappeared behind some trees at the end of the road.
Here’s Edgar Mitchell on the subject. He’s worth listening to.

Marcus, I had an experience similar to yours. I comes out of whatever I had been experiencing from John of God or a guru. At the time about three years ago I was in a remarkably transcendent place filled with love and oneness, and a presence that was with me all of the time. There was magic and it was magical–until I confronted the person who I thought was the source of the experience, and I was ripped the energetic shreds. I was wounded from the inside out, and I was equally furious toward this person for doing this to me. I cannot express the depth of pain I was in. I have to say here that this person is remarkably psychic, beyond what I believed to be possible if indeed it was he who I had been experiencing. One night I decided that I would forgive him for what he did. My husband and I went to sleep, and we both awoke from frightening dreams. They weren’t just dreams. They were dreams in waking awareness in trilogy format. We sat up in bed and recounted the dreams. Just as we settled back into bed, the tree outside the south window in my bedroom glowed, and the light rose up the tree until it illuminated the entire tree. As soon as it was sure we saw it, it moved at a speed faster than thought. I don’t know any other way to describe it because it seemed to move faster than the speed of light. It centered itself outside the picture window in the center of our bedroom. It filled the width of the window, was about a third the height, and egg-shaped. Again, when it was certain we saw it it again moved away from the house directly in front of the window about 20 yards away. It repeated the movement scenario moving about a quarter mile away to a still position over the Hudson River. Then, when it was sure we had seen it it moved again at this incredible speed moving north and west to vanish to a point in the horizon. It was definitely unidentified. Was it an ET? I don’t think so. I attribute it to a very powerful psychic, guru, wizard, whatever the term might be. Maybe I was playing with an entity, but I think it was more a projection of someone who has the ability to do things with consciousness that few people can even imagine. These types of dreams and other experiences such as unimaginable love continued for two years or more. It was magical. My husband experienced it too every night starting at 2 am and ending around 4 am.
They are certainly very interesting experiences, Florie. All I can say is that if your experiences are mediated by a third party, it would be wise for you to reclaim your power from that individual or entity. It is a false teaching which requires a human being to be the source of awakening experiences and non-dual states. All genuine teachings, as far as I know, empower the individual to work directly with their own power as connected to the source, or God or whatever you want to call it. Even “higher” discarnate entities are not required, ultimately. Sure, they may be part of the process, but it is a kind of higher universal law that they cannot interfere with your spiritual development – they can just lend a helping hand from time to time.
It’s been a wild ride. I have done a lot of investigating. I tend to think that the source of any event usually is singular, but in this case I’m not sure if it isn’t, or wasn’t, both some sort of manifestation from John of God and also the guru. My experiences point to both. I drove back my fear and went to the guru’s events after he attacked me. The fear was justifiable. Before he energetically ripped me to shreds he had physically and deliberately shoulder butted my husband. I was at the event and furious because I believed he was the source of the experiences I was having. John of God will be in the US next week, and I’m going. I’ll see how that works out. If he’s attached some sort of troublesome spook to me, I will request he cleans it up. It was a few days after one of the guru events that it came to me at night and brought me into awareness. It said (telepathy), “I didn’t want to hurt you. Think of me as your doctor.” Then it found my hand and transmitted breathtaking love through me. I didn’t accept it. When the guru tore me to pieces he also transmitted, “I’m not your friend.” That said, John of God claims to work with spiritual doctors. It was fascinating and a confusing game. I’m over most of the anger and wounding, something I didn’t need because I have enough of my own wounds to heal, much less something inflicted on me by a supposed healer. I don’t feel safe enough or engaged enough in my own experience to connect to higher states of consciousness because I or my private experience was turned into entertainment for someone else. I’m in no hurry to open up and invite it back in.
